“There is a principle that cannot
fail to keep a man in everlasting
 ignorance—that principle
is contempt prior to investigation.”

Herbert Spencer

Perhaps like many people, you’ve formed an opinion of Christianity by observing those who call themselves “Christians.” Unfortunately, the media has paid more attention to a few corrupt TV evangelists than to millions of true believers. Maybe that’s why so many people’s view of the Christian faith is shaped by what they’ve read in the National Enquirer, and not the Bible. This is unfortunate, since many of life’s most puzzling questions are answered in that one book.

Here are just a few of them: “If there is a God, why is there so much evil in the world?” During the past century, millions of innocent people have been murdered by brutal dictators. Maybe you doubt that there really is a God who cares about the world. The Bible tells us that when God created the heavens and earth, He called it good. However, all of us have rebelled against God. These days, sin is an unpopular word connoting unhealthy guilt and shame. But the Bible describes sin as unloving and selfish behavior. It is putting yourself above others and above God.

“So has God just given up on us?” God promised to send a Savior to take sin away from the world. God spoke to various prophets who predicted who this Savior would be and when he would come. The coming of Jesus fulfilled several dozen specific predictions made hundreds of years before he came to earth. For example, Psalm 22 predicts the exact method of his death — crucifixion — many centuries before the Romans invented crucifixion. Daniel (chapter 9) predicts the exact day Jesus Christ would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey, proclaiming himself as the Savior — over 500 years in advance. The Bible is the only book that makes specific predictions of events far in the future with 100% accuracy. Since Jesus fulfilled these many prophesies, we ought to listen to his words: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, but through me.” (John, Chapter 14:6.)

“If God is in control, why doesn’t He just force us to believe in Jesus?” God gave human beings free will. God wants everyone to come to Him of their own free will, since that’s the only real basis for a loving relationship. “How can a loving God send a good person like me to Hell?” God is just. He will not send anyone to Hell who does not deserve to go there. But what if our sins are much more serious than we think they are? Are you really a good person?

Have you ever lied?

Stolen something?

Taken God’s name and used it as a curse word?

Dishonored your parents?

Made something more important than God?

None of us deserves to be in heaven with God. Jesus died on the cross so that we could go to heaven, even though we don’t deserve to. But if we reject His free gift of forgiveness, we will be punished for our sins.

“How can I be really sure about Jesus?” Jesus said, “Everyone who loves the truth hears my voice” (John

18:37). If you really want to know the truth, you can pray like this: “Jesus, if you are real, make yourself real to

me.” If you are sincere in this prayer, God will answer it. Right now you can get your life in right relationship with God.

Here is what you must do:

1. Admit that you have sinned against God.

2. Be willing to turn away from your sins, as God gives you strength to do so.

3. Believe that Jesus Christ paid for your sins by dying on the cross and being raised from the dead.

The following is an example of a prayer you can pray right now to get your life right with God. Do not put off this decision. You don’t know when your life will end. “Jesus I know that I have sinned against you. I believe that you died for my sins and rose from the dead. Now I ask you to be Lord of my life. Come into my life and make me the kind of person you want me to be. Show me each day what you want me to do. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life with you.”
