San Francisco is one of the most famous cities in the world. Renowned for its beauty (and tourist trade), San Francisco is also well known as the spawning ground for many social movements that have influenced the entire world. During the sixties, millions of young people were drawn into the “hippie” movement, which was centered in San Francisco. These people turned to psychedelic drugs, rock music, and sexual permissiveness in the search for love, peace, and meaning for their lives. Many young people got involved in antiwar activities and social protests in an attempt to change their society. Others turned to cults and gurus for their answers.

The idealism of the sixties has given way to the self-centered materialism of the past three decades . We who have lived through Vietnam, Watergate, and many other atrocities, have become a very cynical generation. “Looking out for Number One” has become our slogan.

In our search for truth, we over looked the One who said. “I am the Truth.” Many of us read books on Astrology and Eastern religion, but never opened a Bible. If we did happen to read something out of the Bible, we would embrace the passages that spoke of God’s love, but ignore the passages that spoke of sin, God’s righteousness, and His judgment. We don’t like to think about God’s judgment, but God has revealed Himself in the Bible as a righteous judge. He will not forever allow a nation, a city, or an individual to continue in rebellion against Him. Egypt, Babylon, Sodom and Gomorrah, and even Israel were judged by God for their sin. In some cases, the judgment was one of total destruction, as with Sodom. In others, the judgment was aimed at bringing the people back to God, as with Israel.

Will San Francisco be judged by God? We have all laughed at those who have set dates for the great “Earthquake” and missed. We do not know when or how God will judge this city, but judgment is inevitable-unless the people of this city will turn back to God.

Over the past four decades, this city has turned farther and farther from God. All over the world, San Francisco has developed a reputation as a city which has rejected the Bible and Christian morality. This year, Christians from all over the United States are coming to San Francisco with a message of hope and a warning. Sodom had no Bible, and only one godly family to warn it of God’s judgment, yet was judged quite severely by God. How much greater will be the judgment on San Francisco, where the Word of God is preached everywhere, if that Word is ignored.

God judges individuals as well as cities. Sometimes God will allow affliction to come into our lives to bring us to a place where we see our need for God. The Bible says that all who sin must die. This not only speaks of physical death (which everyone must endure) but it speaks of a second death-eternal separation from God. Now everyone has sinned and we all stand guilty before God and deserving of his judgment. There are those who laugh at the idea of God’s judgment. Some will throw this pamphlet away and try to push the thought out of their mind. Nonetheless , the day will come when we all will appear before the judgment seat of a righteous God. On that day, those who have rejected God’s mercy and forgiveness will find out that they must face His righteous judgment.

There is a way out. Jesus Christ bore the death penalty for your rebellion when He, being innocent, died on the cross 2000 years ago. Put your faith in Him. Let Him be the Lord of your life.

“Jesus, I know I have disobeyed you. Forgive me for the sins I have committed against you. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I believe that you rose from the dead and are alive today. Come into my life. I want to do your will. Show me what you want me to do and give me the strength to live for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
